Former AVCAT scholarship recipient Andrew Jones emailed us recently to let us know what he’s been up to since graduating with a double degree, Bachelor of Economics and Bachelor of Science, from the University of Queensland in 2014.
In his final semester of university, Andrew said ‘Hopefully I can make a difference in the world. I know many university students aspire to achieve such a thing, only to realise weeks after graduation it is exceptionally difficult to achieve. In the words of Winston Churchill, “Never give up. Never ever ever give up”. I am not sure what is planned for me, but I believe I am well-equipped to make a difference in the private or the public sector, [in] the fields of economics and science, the lives of Australians and people of all nationalities.’
In February 2016 Andrew moved to Canberra and began the Australian Government’s Graduate Program at the Department of Industry, Innovation and Science, a two-year development program that will be completed in December 2017. He says, ‘In this role, I have been given excellent opportunities to work on policy of national significance, including the National Innovation and Science Agenda, Energy markets and East Coast Gas market reforms and even working with Australia’s Chief Scientist, Dr Alan Finkel AO’.
The AVCAT Team congratulate Andrew on his terrific achievement in securing a place in the highly competitive Australian Government Graduate Program and we wish him all the best for what comes next.
