Dean McLachlan – AVCAT Scholar

Dean McLachlan

My name is Dean McLachlan, and I am currently a mature-aged student pursuing a Bachelor of Education. My family’s military history has always been a significant part of my life, and I feel honoured to carry on that legacy in my own way.

Both of my grandparents served in the Australian Armed Forces during World War II, bravely facing the challenges of deployment. Their service and dedication to our country have always been a source of pride and inspiration for me. My father also followed a path of service, working as a “Sally Man” with the Australian Army. His role was to support soldiers by providing them with comfort and guidance during difficult times, a responsibility he took very seriously. His kindness and dedication left a lasting impact on the soldiers he supported—and on me

These experiences within my family shaped my values of empathy, resilience, and service to others. They’ve also influenced my decision to pursue a career in education, where I can make a positive difference in the lives of young people.

The AVCAT scholarship support by RSL Australia has significantly eased the financial pressure of balancing work, study, and family commitments. It has allowed me to focus on my studies and progress toward my goal of becoming a teacher.

Returning to university later in life has been a deeply rewarding experience. After working in various fields, including as a teacher aide and in hospital sterilization, I realised my true passion lies in helping students learn and grow. It hasn’t always been an easy journey, but I’ve found a renewed sense of direction and purpose. The support from AVCAT has played a crucial role in making this possible.

The AVCAT scholarship support by RSL Australia has significantly eased the financial pressure of balancing work, study, and family commitments. It has allowed me to focus on my studies and progress toward my goal of becoming a teacher. I am incredibly grateful for this support, which has made a real difference in my life and my family’s life. Knowing that I’m part of a community that understands the unique experiences of veterans’ families gives me an extra sense of motivation to succeed.

Being a mature-aged student has its challenges, but it has also filled me with pride. My university journey is not just about gaining knowledge—it’s about honouring the legacy of my family’s service and ensuring that I can contribute to the next generation through education. I’m driven by the belief that, just as my father supported those in need, I too can make a positive impact on the lives of others.

Thank you to AVCAT and RSL Australia for providing me with the opportunity to continue my education and for supporting the children and grandchildren of veterans. This journey has given me a sense of pride and direction, and I’m honoured to share my story as part of the AVCAT community.
