In 2018, 20 young people will receive sponsorships to help them complete their tertiary education thanks to the ongoing support of RSL Queensland.
RSL Queensland Veteran Services Manager Rob Skoda said this was the second year RSL Queensland was offering scholarships to the children and grandchildren of ex-serving Australian Defence Force (ADF) members.
“Families provide vital support to Defence personnel, both while they are serving and when they transition out of service. The RSL Queensland scholarship program provides the children and grandchildren of veterans with financial support so they, in turn, can achieve their educational goals,” Mr Skoda said.
RSL Queensland scholarship recipient Susan Benton completed her final year of a Bachelor of Veterinary Science in 2017. In a thank you note to RSL Queensland she said: “I just wanted to write one final letter of thanks to you for your support of myself and others like me. Having been a recipient of AVCAT scholarships for the past four years, I can say it has been invaluable for me. The scholarship allowed me to travel for placements that really suited my interests and goals as well as taking the pressure off financially!
“I cannot thank you enough for your generosity and your kindness – it really is appreciated! I have now graduated as a vet and am starting my new job on Monday, so hopefully I will have plenty of opportunities to pay it forward.”
RSL Queensland has been supporting Queensland’s Defence family since 1916. With more than 240 Sub Branches across ten Districts, RSL Queensland helps current and former service personnel in real and practical ways, providing support, advice and camaraderie through a range of programs, including:
- Partner Education and Training Scholarships of up to $4,000 a year for the partners of current or former ADF personnel.
- Health and wellbeing partnerships, including the RSL RAEMUS Rover off-road racing team, RSL Queensland Surfing Initiative and Trojan’s Trek.
